Notes: Tolmachev (1975a) assigned the plants in the northern Urals and northwestern Siberia eastwards to the Jenisei to subsp. jugoricum. This was the only Papaver he accepted for that region. Petrovsky (1999) mapped the same range, but he in addition mapped a race of P. "radicatum" from these regions (as subsp. occidentale). The analyses of the AFLP markers support occurrence of two races in the northern Urals, one considered by us as subsp. lapponicum and another differing both in morphology and in AFLP markers. We consider the latter subsp. jugoricum. We also extend its range eastwards across Taimyr to northern Yakutia.

Morphologically, subsp. jugoricum differs from both the more western subsp. lapponicum and the more eastern subsp. orientale in, e.g., much less dissected leaves with ovate, approximate lobes, and in smaller flowers. The entire material from the Polar Ural and Yugorski Peninsula eastwards to the Jenisei River differ in overall appearance from the other races of this species.
