8x. - Canada (Banks Island). - Octoploid in FCM, Solstad (2009, two plants from two localities).
Geography: American Beringian: CAN.
Notes: Papaver sp. "Banks" is morphologically recognizable (Solstad 2009) and documented from five localities (three based on AFLP and two on morphology alone) in the southern and western parts of Banks Island, Nunavut. This part of Banks Island is assumed to have been little or not glaciated during the last glaciation. In the AFLP analysis, the octoploid P. sp. "Banks" joins with the hexaploid branch of P. hultenii rather than with its octoploid branch. Papaver sp. "Banks" may be a separate species, a part of the polymorphy of P. hultenii, or it may be synonymous with an already described species from northeastern Asia. We suspect that Petrovsky's (1999) reports of P. schamurinii from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago refer to our P. sp. "Banks", of which collections have for long been available in the herbaria for study.
