Notes: The Wrangel Island plant assigned by Tolmachev (1975a) and Petrovsky (1999) to Papaver pulvinatum as subsp. tschuktschorum resembles P. microcarpum s. lat., both in morphology and in AFLP markers, but is tetraploid as is P. pulvinatum s. str. Different origins of P. pulvinatum s. str. and subsp. tschuktschorum cannot be excluded. Petrovsky commented that P. pulvinatum subsp. interius, described from West Chukotka, could be viewed as an ecological variant in xeric, southfacing habitats in inland regions.
