2n= >60 70 (10x). - Far East (N). - Several reports, numerous counts. Decaploid in FCM, Solstad (2009, one plant).
Not included: A report of 2n = 56 (8x) from northern Yakutia (Zhukova et al. 2003, four counts), probably referrable to P. variegatum (see above). Another report of 2n = 56 (8x) from Wrangel Island (Zhukova and Petrovsky 1985a) might, according to Petrovsky, belong to P. atrovirens.

Geography: Asian Beringian: RFE.

Notes: Petrovsky (1999) mapped Papaver paucistaminum from three separate areas of northern and northeastern Asia: from eastern Taimyr to east of Lena River, from Kolyma River to western East Chukotka and South Chukotka, and from Wrangel Island. The material from the type area of West Chukotka is indubitable, whereas the reports from the two other areas should be re-evaluated. The reports of P. paucistaminum from northern Yakutia and Taimyr (Petrovsky 1999; Zhukova et al. 2003) are based on material corresponding to our sample assigned by AFLPs to P. variegatum. The reports from Wrangel Islands probably refer to P. atrovirens (below).
