Notes: Papaver variegatum has been considered a local species of the Putorana plateau and southern Taimyr, extending east to the Lena River. The material we have investigated for AFLP markers is from the Lena River area.
Petrovsky (1999, comments) has suggested that P. variegatum could be either a subspecies of P. lapponicum or a southern ecotype of P. schamurinii. The AFLP results suggest otherwise. Its closest similarity in AFLPs is with P. mcconnellii, albeit not very similar. However, morphologically it resembles P. lapponicum and P. schamurinii and their relatives in many features except for a narrow capsule and distinctly peaked stigmatic disk. This peaked disk is otherwise typical of P. paucistaminum. We assume that the reports from Yakutia of P. paucistaminum (Petrovsky 1999) and of hexaploids (Zhukova et al. 2003) refer to plants we have assigned to P. variegatum. Chukotkan P. paucistaminum is decaploid. Internal note: Our understanding of Papaver variegatum may be erroneous, should be checked anew.
