2n= (1) 42 (6x). - Far East (Wrangel Island). - Zhukova and Petrovsky (1985a, three counts). Hexaploid in FCM, Solstad (2009, five plants from one locality together with octoploids).

Geography: Asian Beringian: RFE.

Notes: Papaver uschakovii is restricted to Wrangel Island. A report from Chukchi Peninsula (Tolmachev 1975a: 29) was erroneous.

AFLP markers support P. uschakoviii as a separate species but related to P. dahlianum. Several markers shared by these two are missing from P. gorodkovii and P. cornwallisense. Petrovsky commented that P. uschakovii is morphologically intermediate between P. dahlianum subsp. polare and P. gorodkovii. This hypothesis was not supported by the AFLP markers. Papaver gorodkovii and P. uschakovii are instead proposed as two parallel species at hexaploid and octoploid levels, probably with partly different, partly the same parents.
