2n= (1) 8x. - Canada (N). - Octoploid in FCM, Solstad (2009, three plants from three localities).
(2) 10x. - Canada. - Decaploid in FCM, Solstad (2009, five plants from four localities).
(3) 84 (12x). - Canada. - Löve (1962b).
FCM octoploids are known from Devon, Cornwallis, and Banks islands, FCM decaploids from Southampton, Ellesmere, Cornwallis, and Banks islands, on Cornwallis and Banks together with octoploids in populations.
Many other reports of octoploids, decaploids, and probably dodecaploids from the Canadian Arctic Arctipelago and northern Greenland may belong to P. cornwallisense.

Geography: North American (N) - amphi-Atlantic (W)?: NOR? CAN GRL.

Notes: For possible presence of Papaver cornwallisense east of Greenland, see the aggregate above.

Petrovsky (1999) mapped P. cornwallisense as widespread in the central parts of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and in northwestern Greenland and as partly sympatric with P. dahlianum (as P. polare) in these regions. His proposal was based on differences in leaf and capsule shapes. In the AFLP analyses, the majority of samples from the central and southern islands of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (including a sample from the type locality of P. cornwallisense) constitute one major cluster, those from the northwestern and northern islands and from northern Greenland constitute another major cluster together with P. dahlianum from northern Europe and northwestern Siberia. The ranges of P. cornwallisense and P. dahlianum as mapped by AFLP markers in northern Canada coincide closely with the ranges based on morphology by Petrovsky (1999). A morphological revision of Papaver sect. Meconella at DAO and CAN in 2009 (Elven and Solstad) is well in accordance with Petrovsky's maps for P. dahlianum and P. cornwallisense. In AFLP markers, P. cornwallisense connects to P. gorodkovii rather than to P. dahlianum.
