3610 Clematis L.
- L., Sp. Pl.: 543 (1753).
- Atragene L., Sp. Pl.: 542 (1753).
Notes: The two arctic representatives of Clematis belong to the Atragene group. The status of Atragene, whether a genus or a part of Clematis, has been discussed among the PAF collaborators. Its main diagnostic character vs. other parts of Clematis is the presence of petaloid staminodes. Pringle (1997) argued for a collective Clematis. He especially focused on "chromosome morphology ... strikingly similar in all subgenera" and on crossing being possible between numerous species in different subgenera. However, he did not state species of the Atragene group to be involved in such crossings. We have decided to enter a collective Clematis.
