Notes: Yurtsev: Delphinium middendorffii is related to D. cheilanthum and D. chamissonis. It differs constantly from D. cheilanthum in the longer and patent pubescence of the leaf lower surface vs. short, appressed, incurved, and in sepals almost as long as spur vs. 1/3 of spur; from D. chamissonis mainly in glabrous, glaucous stems. Other characters are variable among populations, which could support a hypothesis of origin by introgressive hybridization at diploid level between D. cheilanthum and D. chamissonis or their progenitors in the distant past. Today, D. middendorffii occurs both within and well outside the range of the putative parents.
