Notes: Friesen (1993) did not accept arctic occurrences of Actaea erythrocarpa in Siberia.

Several American authors (e.g., Taylor and Mulligan 1968; Compton et al. 1998a, 1998b) have argued for a merger of A. erythrocarpa and A. rubra. We follow the view of Jalas and Suominen (1989) and Uotila (2001d) and keep them apart. Uotila summarized a series of differential characters not considered by the North American authors and concluded that: "Uniting the Eurasiatic A. erythrocarpa and the North American A. rubra would mean unfortunate and unnecessary loss of information".
