2n= (1) 28 (4x). - Vouchers in LE, see note below.
(2) 42 (6x). - Russia (N). - Sokolovskaya (1955, omitted by Löve and Löve 1975a).
(3) 56 (8x). - Russia (N), Siberia (N, S), Far East (N), Alaska, Canada, Greenland. - Numerous reports.
(4) 62 (ca. 9x). - Europe (Svalbard). - Flovik (1938, omitted by Löve and Löve 1975a). Plants with aborting anthers and pollen.
The predominant ploidy level is hexaploid but also other levels have been proved in plants morphologically belonging to A. latifolia s. str.
Unassigned counts:
(1) 28 30 (4x). - Alaska. - Bowden (1960a); Mitchell and McKendrick (1975); Mitchell (1992).
(2) 42 (6x). - Alaska. - Mitchell and McKendrick (1975); Mitchell (1992).
(3) 56 (8x). - Alaska. - Mitchell and McKendrick (1975); Mitchell (1992).

Geography: Circumpolar-alpine: NOR RUS SIB RFE ALA CAN GRL.

Notes: Tzvelev, Aiken, and Elven: Support for rank as species has been found in an assumption of two ploidy levels (see, e.g., Löve and Löve 1975a): A. arundinacea as tetraploid (2n = 28) and A. latifolia as octoploid (2n = 56). The chromosome number situation is, however, more complicated. Tzvelev (1976) reported chromosome numbers of 2n = 42, 56, and 62 for A. latifolia s. str. Five voucher specimens with the characters of A. latifolia s. str., but with 2n = 28, occur among the chromosome vouchers at LE that we (Aiken and Elven) examined and annotated in 1999.
