Notes: The southern Greenland and northeastern North American Hierochloë orthantha differs from H. alpina s. str. in size and growth form, number of veins of lemma, palea pubescence, and in length and place of attachment of awn, in addition to a different main (but not exclusive) 9-ploid chromosome number and a distinct distribution. Recent authors concerned with Greenland (Feilberg 1984a; Fredskild 1996) have lumped it with H. alpinum s. str., whereas Soreng et al. (2003) accepted a subspecies. We accept a species. We do, however, not accept records from outside northeastern North America and southern Greenland (i.e., we omit records from the Russian Far East and Alaska).
