68 70. - Europe (N). - Löve and Löve (1956b); Engelskjøn and Knaben (1971).
Geography: European (NW) (or amphi-Atlantic?): ICE CAN? GRL?
Notes: Subspecies nardina is frequent in the mountains of northern Fennoscandia but does not reach the Arctic there. Doubts about Greenland and Canada are about whether both subspecies are present.
Ball: There are no doubts about plants being present in Canada which conform to descriptions of European Carex nardina and which match specimens. The trouble is that they are scattered although most frequent in the east, but nowhere do they form populations which can be treated as a discrete entity. Another case in which the small sparse populations in Europe and Asia can be differentiated, but the large widespread populations in North America confound the separation.
Elven: I agree with Ball as to variation in growth form but I am not sure that the characters in the perigynia show the same pattern. This issue deserves a closer study.
