Geography: Circumpolar-alpine.
Notes: Several authors have accepted two subspecies of Carex marina (e.g., Böcher in Halliday and Chater 1969b; Böcher et al. 1978; Chater 1980): subsp. pseudolagopina in as the major race in Greenland and also present in Svalbard, and subsp. marina in northern Russia, Siberia, Alaska, Canada, and as very rare in western Greenland. Toivonen (2002) discussed them but did not accept two taxa. We provisionally accept them.
