Notes: Hendrichs et al. (2004; ITS) found Carex acuta to nest with C. nigra and C. wiluica (the latter by us included in C. nigra). Nakamatte and Lye (2008; AFLP) found it to nest with the non-arctic Europeans C. elata and C. trinervis but not with C. nigra. Davis and Barrington (2008; ITS, ETS) found the same cluster but also with both European and American C. nigra including var. "juncella" (= var. juncea). Carex acuta is morphologically distinct from the other species mentioned, not least in its densely white-papillose lower leaf surface, and should be easily identified in the vouchers for the genetic analyses. The important feature for us in these molecular assignments is that C. acuta does not nest with the superficially similar C. aquatilis.
