- Carex alpina var. inferalpina Wahlenb., Fl. Lapp.: 241 (1812). Neotype (UPS): Norway: Nordland, Sørfold, "Norska Nordland vid Sörfoldbotten", 21. July 1807, leg. G. Wahlenberg (Moberg and Nilsson 1991: 296). - Carex norvegica subsp. inferalpina (Wahlenb.) Hultén, Acta Univ. Lund., n. s., sect. 2, 38, 1: 348 (1942).

Geography: Circumboreal-polar: NOR RUS SIB RFE ALA CAN.
Notes: In Norway, Carex media is found north to the Arctic at Kjøllefjord in Lebesby (O), to the Borderline Arctic at Skittenelv in Vadsø (O).
Elven and Murray: Carex media is often considered a subspecies of C. norvegica in European literature. We consider it specifically distinct. The two taxa are largely sympatric in northern Europe. The proposed hybrids we have studied belong to misidentified C. norvegica s. str.
