3309038-039 The Carex petricosa aggregate C. macrogyna, C. petricosa

Geography: Asian (N/C) - amphi-Beringian - Cordilleran & North American (NE).

Notes: Elven: Hultén (1968a) accepted two species from Alaska and the Yukon Territory - Carex petricosa and C. franklinii - and synonymized the Asian C. macrogyna with C. franklinii. For Siberia, Malyschev (1990) synonymized both C. franklinii and C. macrogyna with C. petricosa.

Egorova: Carex macrogyna and C. petricosa are closely related but best kept apart as species.

Ball: I only partly agree with Egorova. We found that the collections from farther south in Asia were different but the material from Chukotka was indistinguishable from North American C. petricosa.

Elven and Egorova: We agree with Ball but still include two species. Plants from southern and northern Siberia (Yakutia) differ from the Chukchi Peninsula plants and C. petricosa. We accept C. macrogyna (described from southeastern Siberia) as a central and northern Asian, non-Beringian species. We follow Ball and transfer the Chukchi Peninsula plants to C. petricosa (var. petricosa) which then becomes amphi-Beringian and Cordilleran. In addition there is a northeastern North American var. misandroides.
