Notes: Schmid (1983) cited a different Gotland specimen (also UPS) as holotype of Carex oederi subsp. pulchella Lönnr.

Carex viridula var. pulchella reaches the Arctic in Iceland (Kristinsson 2008), in Berlevåg in Finnmark (Norway; specimen in O), and at Teriberka-Kharlovka on the Murman coast (European Russia; Hultén 1971b).

Egorova (1999) considered C. scandinavica a species but we rather consider it a variety of C. viridula. Egorova's PAF comments point in the same direction. Typical specimens of the two are morphologically different but there is an even transition in characters when a larger material is compared and much more pollen and fruit fertility in the intermediates than normally found in this species group. The two taxa differ ecologically: var. pulchella is mainly a plant of eroded shores, var. viridula of rich fens. Varietas pulchella mainly occurs within the range of var. viridula but reaches somewhat farther northwards. They are best considered as ecotypical races.
