2n=
(1) 30-33. - Europe (W, N). - Cretin and Bidault (1974, 2n = 30-33); Halkka et al. (1992).
(2) 60 58-64. - Europe, Russia, Canada (E), U.S.A. (E). - Numerous reports.
Löve and Löve (1975a) reported a constant number of 2n = 60 for C. flava. The complicated taxonomy in sect. Ceratocystis makes most chromosome number reports dubious unless the vouchers can be checked. The reports of 2n = ca. 60 are, however, mostly assumed to be reliable for C. flava. Those around 2n = ca. 70 (see below) are more typical of the C. demissa-viridula group and also stem from areas where this group is present. At least one of the reports of the comparatively low number 2n = ca. 30 is from a reliable source as to identification of the material (Halkka et al. 1992).
Not included: Old reports of 2n = ca. 70 from northwestern Europe (Heilborn 1922) and Germany (Tischler 1934; Rohweder 1937) may belong to the C. viridula group or may be based on inexact counts.
Geography: North American - amphi-Atlantic - European: ICE NOR RUS.
Notes: Carex flava does not reach the Arctic in North America.
