2n= 58 58-60. - Russia (NE), Siberia (N). - Sokolovskaya (1970); Krogulevich (1976a).
Not included: Reports of 2n = 58 from northwestern Europe (Löve and Löve 1948) and Iceland (Löve and Löve 1956b) are disregarded as it is uncertain what plant(s) they are based on. Eriophorum russeolum does not occur in Iceland (Kristinsson 2008). Löve's report from there is a fairly obvious fake (probably a Swedish specimen "planted" in the ICEL herbarium, Eythor Einarsson in comment). Löve and Löve (1975a) referred several reports, mostly from the Arctic, separated without any justification on their concepts of subsp. russeolum and subsp. rufescens.

Geography: Amphi-Atlantic - European (N) - Asian (W): RUS SIB CAN.

Notes: Eriophorum russeolum is frequent in northern Norway but not documented to reach the Arctic. With one exception, the reports from the Borderline Arctic in Norway are based on misidentified E. x medium. One specimen labelled "Vadsø" (in the Borderline Arctic) belongs to E. russeolum but the provenience of the specimen is dubious.

Elven and Murray: Eastern Canadian plants should be further compared with European and western Siberian ones before subsp. russeolum is fully accepted to be amphi-Atlantic. They differ from European plants but they also differ from subsp. leiocarpum in western North America, and not only in their deep rusty wool.
