320212a Luzula multiflora subsp. multiflora

Distribution

Northern Iceland: Persistent (Adventive)
Northern Fennoscandia: Persistent (Adventive)
Western Greenland: Persistent (Adventive)
Shrub Tundra: Persistent (Adventive)
Bordering boreal or alpine areas: Scattered

2n= (1) 24. - Europe (W, C, S). - At least five reports.
(2) 36. - Europe, Canada. - Numerous reports.
Kirschner et al. (2002a) reported subsp. multiflora with 2n = 24 and 36 and 'full-size' chromosomes, i.e., as real tetraploids and hexaploids.
Not included: Earlier reports under the name L. multiflora (s. str. or s. lat.) include the numbers 2n = 12, 18, 24, 28, 36, and 48. Many of these probably belong to other species. Löve and Löve (1975a) omitted or changed all reports of counts different from 2n = 36.

Geography: European: ICE* NOR* RUS* GRL*.

Notes: Subspecies multiflora barely reaches the Arctic and probably only as a partly casual adventive. Fertile intermediates between subsp. multiflora and subsp. frigida are frequent in northern Europe, and these reach the Arctic.
