- Lindeb., Bot. Not. 1855: 9 (1856). Lectotype (S G-8019): Norway: "Dovre" probably Sør-Trøndelag: Oppdal, Mt. Knutshø, 1854, leg. C.J. Lindeberg (Kirschner 2001b: 1195). - Luzula arcuata subsp. confusa (Lindeb.) A. Blytt & O.C. Dahl, Haandb. Norges Fl.: 201 (1903) comb. illeg.. See note below.
2n=
(1) 36. - Europe (N), Far East (N), Canada, U.S.A. (NE), Greenland. - Numerous reports.
(2) 48. - Europe (Iceland), Greenland. - Sørensen and Westergaard in Löve and Löve (1948); Löve and Löve (1956b).
Jørgensen et al. (1958) did not distinguish between Luzula arcuata and L. confusa. Their counts from northwestern Greenland probably refer to L. confusa as L. arcuata is not known from that region.
Several of the chromosome number reports referred by Löve and Löve (1975a) for L. confusa should be checked against original publications and vouchers. The Löves sorted numbers and reports on L. confusa and L. arcuata according to an assumption of a constant ploidy difference. Such a difference is improbable. The reports accepted above are those that originally were published as L. confusa or are based on plants from within the range of only L. confusa. Engelskjøn (1979) found mainly 2n = 36 in Norwegian material of both L. arcuata and L. confusa, with a "single, aberrant count" (Knaben 1950) of 2n = 48 in an otherwise 2n = 36 population.
Geography: Circumpolar-alpine: NOR RUS SIB RFE ALA CAN GRL.
Notes: Blytt (1861: 298) published the combination Luzula arcuata subsp. confusa with sufficient reference to basionym but nevertheless illegitimately as it just was cited in synonymy with reference to Hartman. The same combination published by Blytt and Dahl (1906 fascicle available in 1903) was also illegitimate due to lack of references to the basionym and back to the 1861 publication.
Solstad and Elven: We exclude Luzula confusa from Iceland. Some plants, especially in the northwest, show features from L. confusa but not enough for recognition of a second species besides L. arcuata in Iceland. These plants are parts of the problem of separating L. confusa and L. arcuata in the North Atlantic regions.
