1501 Nuphar Sm.
- Sm. in Sibth. and Sm., Fl. Graec. Prodr. 1, 2: 361 (1809) nom. cons..
- Excluded: Nuphar lutea.
Notes: Three taxa reach or border on the Arctic. They have been proposed as races of Nuphar lutea (L.) Sm. but the majority of authors accept species (e.g., Tutin 1993; Wiersema and Hellquist 1997; Uotila 2001b). Nuphar polysepala and N. variegata are allopatric North American vicariants of the widespread but non-arctic Eurasian N. lutea. Nuphar pumila is northern Eurasian and partly sympatric with N. lutea, with much hybridization and partial fertility in the hybrids (Uotila 2001b).
