Notes: The Fennoscandian variation is not clinal. Subspecies lapponica occurs within the larger range of subsp. sylvestris in the south and also partly in the north where subsp. sylvestris is the race in the central parts of Troms province and the Pasvik valley between the Finnmark province in Norway and the Pechenga area in Russia, whereas subsp. lapponica is the race in the other, more or less isolated enclaves in Finnmark and northeastern Troms. We assume that subsp. lapponica is the race that reaches the Arctic in both Norway and European Russia.
