090201 Athyrium filixfemina (L.) Roth
- Roth, Tent. Fl. Germ. 3, 1: 65 (1799). - Polypodium filixfemina L., Sp. Pl.: 1090 (1753). Lectotype: Europe. Plukenet, Phytographia 3: t. 180, f. 4. 1692; typotype (BM): Herb. Sloane 85: 127 (Jonsell and Jarvis 1994: 149).
Geography: Circumboreal.
Notes: Athyrium filix-femina s. lat. is a circumboreal aggregate of three northern taxa and several temperate ones, treated either as species (e.g., Tzvelev in comment), subspecies (e.g., Hultén 1968a and elsewhere), or varieties (e.g., Kato 1993). Kelloff and Skog (2002) found consistent differences but some introgressive hybridization between the two eastern North American taxa. They concluded that the appropriate rank for them was either subspecies or species. The taxa are at the same ploidy level. We accept them for the Checklist as major parapatric to allopatric, slightly intergrading races.
