Geography: Circumpolar-alpine.
Notes: Schleicher, Ann. Bot. (Usteri) 21: 124 (1797), first published Equisetum variegatum as a nomen nudum in a list of collections.
The very widespread subsp. variegatum is replaced in coastal western North America by the distinctive subsp. alaskanum.
