Geography: Amphi-Pacific/Beringian: RFE? ALA CAN?
Notes: A survey of material (ALA) convinced us that not more than a part of the Alaskan material should be assigned to Huperzia haleakalae, mainly in the Panhandle, along the south-central coast, and in the interior, but only bordering on the Arctic. The application of this name to all arctic northwestern North American plants (as done by Wagner Jr. and Beitel 1993) is premature. This view is shared by Tzvelev. Occurrence in other regions, including arctic northeastern Asia, is probable but not confirmed. Kharkevicz (1985) reported H. selago (s. str.) from the boreal parts of the Russian Far East, but if H. selago s. str. is broadly amphi-Atlantic, these records may rather belong to H. haleakalae. The northern plants in Alaska and the Yukon Territory differ morphologically from both H. haleakalae and H. arctica. They may belong to another taxon or to a hybrid combination involving H. haleakalae.
