010102 Lycopodium clavatum L.

GBIF

2n= For chromosome numbers, see subspecies and notes.

Geography: Circumboreal-polar.

Notes: Wagner Jr. and Beitel (1993) accepted Lycopodium clavatum and L. lagopus for North America. We accept two subspecies: the temperate to boreal (mainly forest) plant subsp. clavatum and the northern boreal-alpine to southern arctic (forest and heath) subsp. monostachyon. Our choice of rank as subspecies is due to assumedly fertile transitions.

Only tetraploids are known from North America, Europe, and Siberia. Higher ploidy levels are reported from southern and eastern Asia - 2n = 102 (6x) from Japan and 2n = 136 (8x) from India and Japan - indicating more variation and perhaps more taxa in these regions than elsewhere (see discussion by Tanaka and Takamiya 1981; Takamiya and Tanaka 1982; Takamiya 1989, 1992).
