Potamogeton L.
Publ. & Syn.Zannichelliaceae.
NotesElven and Tzvelev: Numerous hybrids are reported in this genus. Several of these propagate vegetatively, are spread probably mainly by birds, and occur in single sites distant from their parents. Only one is reported to produce fruits (P. x zizii W.D.J. Koch ex Roth, = P. gramineus x lucens). None of the hybrids are reported with an independent range and we do not include any as taxa for the Checklist.
Chromosomes12 (2x). - Europe, Canada (W), Greenland. - Numerous reports.
The majority of chromosome number reports from the northernmost regions may belong to Z. angustifolia.
Not included: A report of 2n = 24 (4x) from New Zealand may belong to another species.
