Notes: Male plants are unknown in subsp. compacta; agamospermous. Hultén (1968a) considered subsp. compacta to belong to the Antennaria friesiana group and to be widely distributed from eastern Greenland west to western Alaska and across to East Chukotka. Bayer (1993: 155) commented about subsp. compacta and A. crymophila: "Hultén's circumscription of A. friesiana subsp. compacta included A. densifolia, A. neoalaskana Porsild, which I recognize as distinct taxa, and A. crymophila Porsild as taxonomic synonyms. Antennaria compacta Malte s. str. and A. crymophila are perhaps hybrid apomicts and are included as synonyms under A. alpina ...". See also Bayer (1991).
