Geography: Asian (N) - amphi-Beringian (W): RUS? SIB RFE ALA.

Notes: Elven and Murray: Tolmachev (1966b) included Rumex aureostigmaticus in R. graminifolius. These two species seem to be closely related but are morphologically separable, especially by the more enlargened, fringed, and pale rose inner tepals in the fruit stage in R. aureostigmaticus vs. less enlarged, with a narrower and more even margin, and more deep red in R. graminifolius, this also in sympatric situations (observed in Siberia). Kashina and Tupitsina (1992) accepted R. aureostigmaticus as a widespread northeastern Asian species replacing the more westernly distributed R. graminifolius. Tzvelev (1989) reported it to be frequent in West Chukotka. Mosyakin (2005) indicated possible North American occurrence of R. aureostigmaticus. This is probably based on specimens from two localities on the Alaskan North Slope (along the Meade and Kaolak rivers) which we confirm as R. aureostigmaticus. Its rank, as species or as race of R. graminifolius, remains to be decided.

Two chromosome vouchers (ALA!) from northern Asia (2n = 14 and ca. 20) conform morphologically to R. aureostigmaticus. They are probably assigned to, respectivelly, R. beringensis and R. krausei in LE. They may indicate that R. aureostigmaticus is at a lower ploidy level than R. graminifolius, which would support its rank as species.
