Solidago virgaurea subsp. lapponica (With.) Tzvelev
Publ. & Syn.Solidago minuta auct., non L. (1763). - Solidago virgaurea subsp. minuta auct., non (L.) Arcang. (1882).
NotesThe name and affinity of the northern European arctic-alpine race has been discussed. The name "minuta" has priority at both species and subspecies rank: Solidago minuta L., Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 1235. 1763 described from the Pyrenees; lectotype: ["Virga Aurea Omnium minima Floribus maximis" in Hermann, Parad. Bat.: 245. 1698. (Garbari and Cecchi in Jarvis and Turland 1998: 367)], S. virgaurea subsp. minuta (L.) Arcang., Comp. Fl. Ital.: 339 (1882). Until recently, this name was applied by Nordic authors to the northern plant but central European authors now mostly accept subsp. minuta and subsp. lapponica as different races, restrict the name "minuta" to the central and southern European mountain plant, and apply the name "lapponica" to the northern plants: "Nahestehenden Parallellformen in den Gebirgen Skandinaviens und in der Arktis" (Wagenitz 1979). We tentatively follow that view.
