Veronica longifolia L.
Publ. & Syn.Veronica septentrionalis Boriss., Bot. Mater. Gerb. Bot. Inst. Komarova Akad. Nauk SSSR 17: 341 (1955). Described from northern Europe. - Pseudolysimachion longifolium subsp. septentrionale (Boriss.) Holub, Folia Geobot. Phytotax. 2: 425 (1967). - Pseudolysimachion septentrionale (Boriss.) Á. Löve & D. Löve, Bot. Not. 128: 518 (1976).
NotesThe species is polymorphic and variable in ploidy level. Löve and Löve (1975a) assigned the northern plants to the assumed diploids Pseudolysimachion septentrionale and P. maritimum and considered P. longifolium to be tetraploid. We have seen no firm evidence for a taxonomically significant correlation between ploidy levels and morphological differences. At least northern and southern Scandinavian plants, and inland and coastal ones, are largely similar morphologically. Note that both diploids and tetraploids are reported also from the relatives V. incana and V. spicata (see below).
Chromosomes(1) 34 36 (2x). - Europe (N), Russia (N, W), Siberia (S). - Numerous reports, partly for var. maritima.
(2) 64 68 68-70 (4x). - Europe (SE), Russia (N), Siberia (N, S), Far East (N). - Numerous reports.
Not included: A report of a Finnish tetraploid (Raitanen 1967) has been critically checked by Kukkonen (1986) and is dubious.
GeographyEuropean - Asian: NOR RUS SIB.
