Hedysarum mackenziei Richardson
Publ. & Syn.Richardson in Franklin, Narr. Journey Polar Sea (Bot. App.): 745 (1823). Holotype (BM): Canada: Nunavut?, "Barren ground from Point Lake to the Arctic Sea", leg. Richardson. - Hedysarum boreale subsp. mackenziei (Richardson) S.L. Welsh, Great Basin Naturalist 28: 152 (1968).
Chromosomes(1) 16 17 (2x, x = 8). - Far East (N), Alaska, Canada. - Numerous reports.
(2) 32 (4x, x = 8). - Far East (East Chukotka). - Yurtsev et al. (1975); Zhukova (1983). These two reports are probably based on the same count.
Not included: Gillett et al. (2007) reported the following chromosome numbers for this taxon: 2n = 14 and 28. The primary sources have 2n = 16 and 32 and Yurtsev commented that x = 7 is characteristic of sect. Gamotion (with H. alpinum and H. americanum) rather than of sect. Multicaulia (with the H. boreale group). Yurtsev assumed that the counts of 2n = 14 and 28 probably reflect a period when the name H. boreale s. lat. was connected to H. hedysaroides. These secondary reports are therefore omitted.
