Trifolium repens L.
Publ. & Syn.L., Sp. Pl.: 767 (1753). Lectotype (LINN): Europe. Herb. Linn. 930.16 (Fawcett and Rendle 1920: 13). - Amoria repens (L.) C. Presl, Symb. Bot. 1: 47 (1831).
NotesTrifolium repens is native or more probably archaeophytic north to the Arctic in Europe and reported to be a more recent but established adventive in northern Siberia east of Polar Ural and in Greenland. Elsewhere it is not clear whether it is established or casual but we have recorded it as established as it usually remains for long, at least in a vegetative state.
Chromosomes(1) 28 32 (4x). - Europe, Russia, Siberia, Asia (C), Canada. - Numerous reports.
(2) 48 (6x). - Moriya and Kondo (1950).
(3) 64 (8x). - Far East (S), and for cultivated plants. - At least three reports.
Löve and Löve (1975a) reported 2n = 32 and omitted the other numbers.
Not included: At least three reports of diploids (2n = 16) from the Caucasus and central Asia probably belong to other species. Trifolium repens is an allopolyploid with known parentage (Ellison et al. 2006).
