Notes | Elven: According to Tzvelev (1964b), subsp. lapponica differs from Poa nemoralis s. str. in smooth spikelet rachis. Tzvelev's hybrid hypotheses for it - as P. nemoralis x palustris or P. glauca x nemoralis - are probable since similar hybrids with similar characters are frequent throughout Fennoscandia, but without assigned rank or names. Tzvelev: Subspecies lapponica is well distinguished from typical P. nemoralis in habitus and ecology. Elven: Subspecies lapponica is entered provisionally. |

Diploids are reported from southern and central Europe. In northwestern Europe, Pálsson (1986) found only 4x, 5x, and 6x in woodland Poa nemoralis, 6x-8x in intermediates towards P. glauca, and 7x-10x in arctic-alpine P. glauca. It is reasonable to assume that the name P. nemoralis (type from Sweden) should be restricted to the lower ploidy levels (2x, 4x, 5x, 6x). All plants we have seen labelled as P. nemoralis from Greenland and from the Arctic in Iceland and Norway show some traits indicative of past or current hybridization with P. glauca. The diploid European counts and the decaploid Asian ones need confirmation. |
