Notes | See notes to the section and to Poa glauca. |
Chromosomes | (1) 14 (2x). - Europe (C, S). - At least four reports. (2) 28 (4x). - Europe, Siberia. - Numerous reports. (3) 28-33. - Europe. - At least two reports. (4) 35 (5x). - Europe, Far East (S). - At least five reports. (5) 42 (6x). - Europe, Far East, Canada, Greenland. - Numerous reports. (6) 47-49-50 (7x). - Europe, Far East (N). - At least two reports. (7) 56 (8x). - Europe (British Isles). - Two reports. (8) 70 (10x). - Asia (C, S), Far East (S). - At least four reports. Diploids are reported from southern and central Europe. In northwestern Europe, Pálsson (1986) found only 4x, 5x, and 6x in woodland Poa nemoralis, 6x-8x in intermediates towards P. glauca, and 7x-10x in arctic-alpine P. glauca. It is reasonable to assume that the name P. nemoralis (type from Sweden) should be restricted to the lower ploidy levels (2x, 4x, 5x, 6x). All plants we have seen labelled as P. nemoralis from Greenland and from the Arctic in Iceland and Norway show some traits indicative of past or current hybridization with P. glauca. The diploid European counts and the decaploid Asian ones need confirmation. |
