Carex laxa Wahlenb.
Publ. & Syn.Carex grayana Dewey, Amer. J. Sci. Arts 25: 141, t. 5, f. 59 (1834). Type: U.S.A.: New York, near Utica, 1832, leg. A. Gray. - Carex livida var. grayana (Dewey) Fernald, Rhodora 28: 8 (1926).
NotesBall and Elven: Egorova (1999) assigned Carex aurea to sect. Paniceae, C. garberi to sect. Phacocystis, and C. bicolor to sect. Bicolores. These three species are rather similar and together constitute the core of the quite distinctive and predominantly North American sect. Bicolores. A molecular study based on ITS sequences (Hendrichs et al. 2004) closely joined C. aurea and C. bicolor but within a main cluster together with species of sect. Paniceae.
