Eriophorum vaginatum L.
Publ. & Syn.L., Sp. Pl.: 52 (1753). Lectotype (UPS): Europe. Herb. Burser I:43 (Simpson in Jarvis et al. 1993: 45-46).
NotesElven and Murray: There are two not very pronounced races of Eriophorum vaginatum. We recognize them in the same way as did Fernald (1925) and Porsild and Cody (1980), i.e., as a Eurasian and western North American subsp. vaginatum and an eastern North American subsp. spissum, with a slight overlap in ranges west of Hudson Bay, and with morphological characters as described by those authors and by Novoselova (1994), for subsp. vaginatum vs. subsp. spissum: flowering heads narrowly elliptic to narrowly ovate vs. broadly ovate to globular; anthers 2-3 mm vs. (0.8) 1-2 (2.5) mm; and achenes broadly obovate to nearly elliptic vs. obovate. Hultén's (1942, 1968a) very different concept of these two races made them largely sympatric and morphologically indistinguishable. Ball and Wujek (2002) did not recognize races in E. vaginatum.
Chromosomes58. - Europe (Norway). - Knaben and Engelskjøn (1967).
