Notes | Stuckenia vaginata has very recently (2009) been found far north in Norway but still some tens of kilometres south of the Arctic. Tzvelev (1987c) accepted three species for the Russian Far East: Potamogeton borealis (i.e., S. filiformis s. lat.), P. pectinatus, and P. subretusus. Hultén and Fries (1986) mapped S. vaginata from the Chukchi Peninsula but Russian sources do not accept it from there. The record should be viewed in connection with the problems distinguishing among S. filiformis subsp. occidentalis, S. pectinata, and S. vaginata in the Beringian regions. Haynes and Hellquist (2000c) mapped S. vaginata with a quite disjunct range in North America. We have investigated specimens annotated by these authors from Alaska and Canada (ALA, CAN) and do not find the same character combination as those we accept for Eurasian plants of S. vaginata. See S. filiformis below. |
