NotesTwo taxa within Heracleum sphondylium s. lat. are sometimes treated as races, sometimes as species: subsp. sphondylium (H. sphondylium s. str.) in Atlantic Europe and subsp. sibiricum (H. sibiricum) widespread in Europe and western Siberia. Fertile intermediates occur everywhere they meet (Fröberg 2010) and we treat them as subspecies. Subspecies sphondylium is non-arctic.
