Described from numerous sites in eastern Europe from the Baltic states south to Serbia and Dalmatia. - ?Hieracium caespitosum subsp. brevipilum (Nägeli & Peter) P.D. Sell, Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 71: 259 (1976).
NotesSell and West (1976) included Hieracium onegense in H. caespitosum subsp. brevipilum. Sennikov (PAF proposal and comments) considered it specifically different from H. caespitosum. Bräutigam and Greuter (2007) accepted the species but assigned it to a Pilosella caespitosa aggregate.
