Saussurea angustifolia subsp. yukonensis (A.E. Porsild) Cody
Publ. & Syn.Cody, Canad. Field-Naturalist 108: 95 (1994). - Saussurea angustifolia var. yukonensis A.E. Porsild, Bull. Natl. Mus. Canada 101: 28 (1945). Type: Canada: the Northwest Territories, the east slope of the Mackenzie Mountains, leg. Wynne-Edwards 8403. See Porsild (1951). - Saussurea viscida subsp. yukonensis (A.E. Porsild) Hultén, Acta Univ. Lund., n. s., sect. 2, 46, 1: 1629 (1950).
NotesElven and Murray: Saussurea angustifolia subsp. yukonensis has been widely misunderstood as evident from identifications of the specimens from Alaska and the Yukon Territory (ALA). Alan Batten re-identified the majority of specimens previously assigned to subsp. yukonensis as alpine, low-grown S. angustifolia s. str. We agree with his evaluation. What remains is clearly different from both S. angustifolia s. str. and its var. viscida, and our opinion is that subsp. yukonensis may deserve higher rank. If the ploidy difference is confirmed, specific rank should be considered.
Chromosomes52 (4x, x = 13). - Canada (Yukon). - Packer (1964); Mulligan and Porsild (1969b).
Löve and Löve (1975a) assigned these two reports to S. viscida. As both counts were made on plants from the Yukon Territory, they do not belong to the insular Bering Sea S. viscida s. str. but rather to subsp. yukonensis.
