Saussurea angustifolia var. viscida (Hultén) S.L. Welsh
Publ. & Syn.S.L. Welsh, Great Basin Naturalist 28: 152 (1968). - Saussurea viscida Hultén, Acta Univ. Lund., n. s., sect. 2, 46, 1: 1627 (1950). Holotype (S!): Alaska: St. Lawrence Island, Sevoonga and neighborhood, July-Aug. 1931, leg. Geist.
NotesIn Hultén's description (1950) and subsequent treatments (e.g., Hultén 1968a), Saussurea viscida is distinguished from S. angustifolia on a combination of stature (low-grown with broader leaves), pubescence (predominance of multicellular glandular hairs vs. nearly non-glandular and arachnoid), and number and shape of involucral bracts (2-3 rows of broad subequal bracts vs. 3-4 rows of much narrower bracts distinctly different among rows). These characters may not combine as nicely as this. The plants from East Chukotka that we have inspected have the habit and bracts of S. angustifolia s. str. but abundant glandular hairs.
