Notes | Korobkov, Murray, and Elven: Artemisia furcata is polymorphic but we have found no significant differences between material assigned under the two species names A. furcata and A. trifurcata. Both names are based on Asian plants. The North American plants differ slightly morphologically from the Asian ones and might constitute a race. Shultz (2006) suggested that "the taxonomic confusion arising from a myriad of morphologic variants ... may indicate introgression with other species". This may be true even if hybridization is not otherwise suggested to be widespread among northern Artemisia. There may be a pattern of auto-allopolyploidization as suggested by the many ploidy levels. Note, however, that Shultz included A. hyperborea, a species we consider apart (see below), in A. furcata. |
