Publ. & Syn.Hultén, Ark. Bot., n. s., 7, 1: 138 (1968). - Artemisia arctica var. beringensis Hultén, Acta Univ. Lund., n. s., sect. 2, 46, 1: 906 (1950). Holotype (NY): Alaska: the Pribilof Islands, St. Paul Island, 30. July 1891, leg. Merriam.
NotesSubspecies beringensis is vouchered to reach the Arctic at least in the Nunivak, St. Matthew, and St. Lawrence islands.
Korobkov: We always regarded subsp. beringensis to be a morphologically well-defined taxon with a typical insular distribution in the Bering Sea. Plants close to this subspecies have not been found in the Chukchi Peninsula despite detailed floristic investigations. The Chukchi Peninsula coastal subsp. arctica is diploid and definitely differs morphologically from the island plants with their thick pubescence of reddish hairs. Analysing size of pollen grains, Ehrendorfer (1964) confidently pointed out that this race must be polyploid.
