Leucanthemum vulgare Lam.
Publ. & Syn.Leucanthemum ircutianum DC., Prodr. 6: 47 (1838). Described from the Irkutsk area (Siberia).
NotesThe ploidy 'races' of Leucanthemum vulgare s. lat. have often been considered species, e.g., the diploids as L. vulgare s. str. and the tetraploids as L. ircutianum, but at least as documented from Norway (Vasshaug 1964), the two cannot be kept apart on morphological evidence and should be considered one species. Boldyreva (1997a): "Specimens with 1-sided coronet in achenes of ray flowers described ... as L. ircutianum DC. are found sporadically all over the distribution range of L. vulgare in Siberia. A large-scale review of achenes of ray flowers shows that this characteristic varies even within a given population". Heywood (1976) accepted ploidy levels from 2x to 12x within L. vulgare.
This perennial species is perhaps persisting vegetatively but not seed-reproducing in southwestern Greenland (Pedersen 1972).
Chromosomes(1) 18 (2x). - Europe, Russia, Siberia, Far East, Canada. - Numerous reports, e.g., 17 counts from Norway alone (see Engelskjøn 1979).
(2) 36 (4x). - Europe, Russia, Siberia, Canada. - Numerous reports, e.g., 84 counts from Norway alone (see Engelskjøn 1979).
Outside northern areas there are numerous additional reports for a long series of chromosome numbers: 2n = 18, 36, 54, 72, 90, and up to 198 (22x).
