Gnaphalium uliginosum L.
Publ. & Syn.Gnaphalium pilulare Wahlenb., Fl. Lapp.: 205, t. 13 (1812). Described from "Lapland" (northern Scandinavia). - Filaginella pilularis (Wahlenb.) Tzvelev, Novosti Sist. Vyssh. Rast. 27: 150 (1990).
NotesPedersen (1972) argued that Gnaphalium uliginosum is native but perhaps somewhat ephemeral in western Greenland. It follows the bird migration routes.
Tzvelev (2000a, in comment) and several other Russian authors accept two species - Filaginella uliginosa and F. pilularis - based on glabrous vs. hairy fruits. We do not know the supporting arguments and can therefore not evaluate them. Barkalov (1992) accepted the two species for the Russian Far East but reported them to be largely sympatric, Gnaphalium pilulare as the most northern but not mapped to reach the Arctic. Kirpichnikov (1959) did not accept G. uliginosum s. str. from Siberia and rather divided the material on four other species, all described by him: G. rossicum Kirp., G. baicalense Kirp., G. kasachstanicum Kirp., and G. sibiricum Kirp. Khanminchun (1997) referred to Kirpichikov's species but did not accept them for Flora Sibiri. The arctic material collected is usually without developed fruits and the proposed separations can therefore not be applied. We suspect that part of the proposed subdivision may be due to morphological effects of autogamy and extensive inbreeding.
