Euphrasia arctica Lange ex Rostr. | |
Publ. & Syn. | Rostr., Bot. Tidsskr. 1, 4: 47 (1870-1871). Described from the Faeroes. |
Notes | The name Euphrasia arctica has caused much confusion. Many authors have applied this name to all or at least the most common of arctic amphi-Atlantic plants (e.g., Böcher et al. 1957 for Greenland; Rønning 1964, 1979 for Svalbard; Scoggan 1979 for Canada). This usage is erroneous; the reports refer to E. wettsteinii (= E. frigida auct.). Euphrasia arctica was described from the Faeroes and is considered by Yeo a species of oceanic, non-arctic northwestern Europe: the Faeroes, the British Isles, and western Scandinavia. However, E. arctica approach or reach the Arctic. Kristinsson (2010) reported the species from the Borderline Arctic in northern Iceland, confirmed by us. In Scandinavia, the species has a coastal distribution in the western parts north to the southern parts of northern Norway. |
Chromosomes | 44 42-48 (4x). - Europe (N, C). - Several reports for E. brevipila, E. officinalis (s. lat.), and E. stricta. Not included: Two reports of 2n = 44 (4x) from Iceland and Greenland, referred by Löve and Löve (1975a) for E. arctica, are both suspect, but see E. arctica below. |
