Empetrum eamesii Fernald & Wiegand
Publ. & Syn.Fernald & Wiegand, Rhodora 15: 215 (1913). Type (GH): Canada: Newfoundland, Mount Steepmore (or Seemore), 12. July 1910, leg Fernald and Wiegand 3659. - Empetrum rubrum subsp. eamesii (Fernald & Wiegand) R.D. Good, J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 47: 519 (1927). - Empetrum nigrum var. eamesii (Fernald & Wiegand) B. Boivin, Naturaliste Canad. 93: 433 (1966). - Empetrum rubrum var. eamesii (Fernald & Wiegand) Cronquist in Gleason & Cronquist, Man. Vasc. Pl. Northeast U.S. & Adjacent Canada, ed. 2: 864 (1991).
NotesMirré, Elven and Murray: The red-fruited Empetrum eamesii appears as 'basal' in the current Empetrum phylogeny (Popp et al. in prep. a, b), i.e., the oldest split is between this species on one side and E. nigrum s. lat. + E. rubrum on the other. Vassiljev (1961) reported E. eamesii from the Arctic in eastern Greenland, eastern Canada, and southern Alaska but occurrences in eastern or other parts of Greenland and in Alaska are not supported by other authors. Occurrence in the Arctic or in the Borderline Arctic remains to be confirmed. The currently confirmed localities are non-arctic.
Chromosomes26 (2x). - Canada - Diploid in FCM (Popp et al. in prep. a).
Mirré and Popp: The red-fruited eastern Canadian plants are diploid in flow cytometry and also dioecious. The reports by D. Löve (1960) and Löve & Löve (1966), stating them to be hermaphroditic and tetraploid, must refer to some other plant, probably E. atropurpureum.
